Overview
Industrial Engineering (IE) is concerned with the design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy by synchronizing specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results for such systems. Industrial Engineering is providing analytical skills and educational training to analyze, solve and optimize the complex real world problems encountered in different sectors of our economy. Manufacturing, Logistics, financial and insurance, health care and many other service sectors employ industrial engineers to address their problems and gain their efficiency, productivity, and market share. All modern tools and techniques such as optimization, simulation, stochastic modelling, system dynamic, statistical modelling, and computational intelligence are considered in minute details to solve real world problems. Linear and non-linear interactions observed during development of decision support model through analytical tools, are interlinked with recent information and communication tools (ICT) to simplify the implementation of decision making process for the benefit of industry in particular and society in general.

| B.Tech in Industrial Engineering (IE) (Duration: 4 years) | Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in IIT Kharagpur is conducted through written entrance examinations. Admission to undergraduate programs in all IITs is tied to the Indian nstitute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). Candidates who qualify for admission through IITJEE can apply for admission in a four-year B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) degree, a five-year B.Arch. degree, a five-year Dual Degree (Integrated Bachelor & Master of Technology) or a five-year integrated M.Sc (Master of Sciences) at IIT Kharagpur. |
| M.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management (Duration: 2 years) | The Institute offers 2-year M. Tech program in Industrial Engineering and Management for candidates qualifying Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in a number of relevant disciplines. Latest information will be available in GATE prospectus of the current year. |
| M.Tech in Operations Research and Data Analytics (Duration: 2 years) | The Institute offers 2-year M. Tech program in Operations Research and Data Analytics (ORDA) for candidates qualifying Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in a number of relevant disciplines. | Master of Science (MS) (By Research) | Research fellows are hired from time to time as per the requirements of research projects. The job listings are posted on http://www.iitkgp.ac.in/temporary-jobs. The fellows have the option to pursue MS in the department. The application for MS is invited twice annually during March-April and October-November. |
